Dr. Delwar Hossain, Professor of International Relations, Dhaka University : The UN Secretary-General and World Bank President’s visit in Bangladesh will mount pressure on the supporters of Myanmar.
But this pressure cannot be such that it will force Myanmar to immediately take measures regarding the repatriation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh. Nonetheless, the visit must force Myanmar’s supporters – India, China, and Russia – to reevaluate their stance. We have already seen instances of this happening.
Our foreign minister is currently on a diplomatic tour in China, speaking with his Chinese counterpart and others. China has even assured us of working more on the Rohingya issue.
Generally speaking, the Rohingya crisis is now an international issue. The visit of the UN Secretary-General and World Bank President proves this. The Rohingya issue is of great importance to the world now. But I don’t think a visit by these two influential people will hasten any progress. It could, however, strengthen the current diplomatic process between Bangladesh and Myanmar regarding the Rohingya issue.
