Bringing an end to 37 years of presidency and sparking triumphant celebrations in the nation’s streets, Zimbabwe’s Mugabe has resigned. A letter from Mr. Mugabe read out by the speaker of parliament informed that the decision to step down was voluntary and he had made it to allow a smooth transfer of power. South African opposition parties as well as African Union commission chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat remarked that they appreciate Mugabe’s decision to stand down. The Democratic Alliance (DA) called it “victory for the people of Zimbabwe” and reassured that ruling party ZANU-PF will remain even though Mugabe left. On Wednesday, China conveyed respect for Mugabe’s decision to resign and Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang asserted that China’s policy toward Zimbabwe would not change.
