The High Court issued a rule on the acceptance of English grammar books of various authors approved by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) from fourth grade to graduate, reports Sarabangla.net.
The HC bench consisted Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Quader declared the rule by adding the wrong chapters written by various authors in NCTB approved books in the filed writ petition.
English grammar written by Chowdhury and Hossain, Babul Chandra Shil, Prof. FM Abdul Rob, Saima Prasad Ghosh, Feroz Mukul, Saifur Rahman Khan for fourth grade to graduation why is incorrect, why they shouldn’t be declared as illegal and stopping their selling, the rule has been issued.
Within four weeks, Chowdhury and Hossain were told by Secretary of Education, Vice-Chancellor of the National University, Director General of Bangla Academy, Director General of Secondary and Higher Education Directorate (Mausi), President of Publishers Association, Chairman of National Text Book Board (NCTB).
Although the order was issued on Sunday but the lawyers concerned confirmed the order yesterday.
Md. Mozammel Haque was hearing the writ with lawyer Tanvir Ahmed and lawyer Shakib Mabud’s company.
Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al Mahmood Bashar was for the state.
Later, the lawyer of the writ petitioner Tanvir Ahmed said, “All the grammar books that are NCTB approved from 4th grade to graduation, almost all have grammatical mistakes. In each of these Grammar books Noun is shown as a pronoun. For example, the book Advanced Learners Communication and English Grammar and Composition reads grammar from fourth grade to seventh grade. In this book the words’ Bangladesh, Dog, Dhaka etc. are shown as pronoun. Moreover, the subject is basically seven (i, you, we, he, she, it, they), but these are shown in the grammar books (me, us, my, our, ours, tho, the, your, yours, your). Almost every English grammar approved by the NCTB has the same mistake.”
The lawyer said that for the past 12 years students of different levels have been taught wrong English. He feels the student’s English base is weakening. NCTB approved various English grammar books are being taught. There are many inconsistencies, mistakes in these grammar books.
Despite trying to get their attention in different ways, the educational institutions or the concerned authorities have not taken any initiative in these amendments.
In this, our future generations are undermining the fundamental right to education provided in the Constitution.
It was from this concern that the former public lecturer of English Department of Konabari College of Gazipur made the writ petition in the public interest.
Helal Uddin Patwari, on June 25, before applying for a writ in the relevant branch of the High Court, he appealed to the Secretary of the Ministry of Secondary Higher Secondary Education on April 12 and 27 to seek correction of wrong and misleading rules in English gram.
On May 5, after receiving no response, he applied to the chairman of the board of national curriculum and textbooks.
For example, on page 7 of the seventh grade, Advanced Learners’ Communication English Grammar and Composition, the words 25, including I, U, Wii, Hei, Shi, It, De, Mis, are highlighted as subjects.
The rules for adding ‘ING’, ‘IED’ and ‘ED’ are incorrectly mentioned at the end of the verb on page 125 of high school professor FM Abdur Rab’s ‘Self-Teaching Ensemble Language and Composition’.
It has been said that if the last letter of ‘Verb’ is ‘Consonent’ then its previous letter is ‘Vowel’ then the consonent of the last will have to be added by adding another consonant. For example, there are five examples like ‘begin-begin, dig-digging, get-getting … Applicant asserts that there are more than 125 words that do not go with this rule. For example, he says, by adding ing with Open, we write Opening. But if we were to write in that formula, then Opening would have to be written. But this spell is wrong.
In the same way, more than 125 words like Develop, Visit, Answer, Suffer, Listen should be typed incorrectly. It also didn’t say how to add ‘s’ or ‘es’ or ‘ies’ to indicate the third Parson Singular number with ‘Verb’. There are numerous inconsistencies and mistakes.
