[2] Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina yesterday said that the investigation into the dual citizenship of independent lawmaker Md Shahidul Islam Papul is underway, reports BSS.
[3] She also pointed that Papul’s parliamentary membership may be revoked if he is found guilty in the probe, reports The Daily Star.
[4] “We’re talking to the Kuwaiti government whether he (Papul) is a Kuwaiti citizen. We’ll look into the matter,” she said. The prime minister made these comments when BNP lawmaker Harunur Rashid raised the issue on point of order in the House.
[5] “That lawmaker is an independent MP. He sought nomination from Awami League but we didn’t give it to him. We gave the seat (Laxmipur-2) to Jatiya Party. But JP’s Noman who was given nomination, didn’t participate in the election and MP Papul won in the national polls,” Sheikh Hasina said.
The leader of the House further said that Papul also made his wife a lawmaker (from reserved seats for women in parliament).
“We didn’t do that,” she said.
Meanwhile, Kuwait’s Central Agency for Public Tenders has cancelled the extension of contract for cleaning services at Kuwait International Airport and its facilities, as the contract was concluded with the company of the Bangladeshi MP accused of money laundering and visa trading, Arab Times reported Tuesday.
Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul, managing director and chief executive officer of Marafie Kuwaitia Group, was arrested on June 6 and is currently under the custody of security authorities along with a number of other suspects.
