‘No justice in one yr, road safety still elusive’

One year has gone by after my daughter was killed in a road accident. However, the case has not been disposed of yet.
The demand for road safety remains elusive. I demand exemplary punishment of the killers of my daughter.
Jahangir Alam, father of Dia Khanam Mim and plaintiff of the case told this to sarabangla.net.
“The accident took place due to reckless driving. The driver of the vehicle had no license to drive heavy vehicle. Now driving licenses are being provided in exchange for money without any test and training. The bus owners are employing drivers without any verification,” said Jahangir.
“I have driven car for the last 20-25 years abiding by traffic rules. No accident took place during my driving. However, my daughter was killed. I have quit the profession after the death of my daughter. Road accidents happen less if you remain careful. Accidents are taken place mostly by the fresh drivers,” said he, adding that Dia’s mother has been able to reconcile herself to the death.
On July 29 last year, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College — Abdul Karim Rajib, 18, and Dia Khanam Mim, 17 — were run over when two Jabal-e-Noor buses were speeding to overtake each other on Airport Road.
Their deaths sparked a huge public outrage and unprecedented nationwide student demonstrations demanding road safety.
Dia’s father Jahangir Alam filed the case with Cantonment Police Station.
The accused are drivers Masum Billah and Zobair Hossain Sumon, helpers Enayet Hossain and Kazi Asad,
and owners Shahadat Hossain and Jahangir Alam. Of them Shahadat is on bail, Asad on the run, and the remaining four in jail.
On September 6 last year, the investigation officer submitted the charge-sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka against the six, and homicide charges were framed against them on October 25.
