[2] Around 42 percent of the ethnic population of the country live in Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) while the remaining 58 people live in the plainland.
[3] Ethnic groups like Chakma, Marma and Tripura inhabit the hilly regions while Garo, Santal, Khasi and Oraon live in the plainlands. The ethnic groups living in the plainlands are more deprived.
[4] Due to poverty and backwardness, they are coming out of their traditional way of living. Most of the ethnic groups living in the plainlands are landless.
[5] Against this backdrop, the Department of Livestock has taken up a project for the uplift of the ethnic groups of the plainlands. [6] The project has been taken up on July 1, 2019 and it will end on June 30 of 2023. The project will be implemented in 210 upazilas of 29 districts.
