Danica Roem became the nation’s first openly transgender state lawmaker in Tuesdays’s election. According to media, Roem defeated Bob Marshall who was one of Virginia’s most socially conservative lawmakers. Roem’s gender identity was not an important part of her campaign. She rather focused on Nirginia’s traffic problems, jobs and schools. Roem will be the first openly transgender candidate to serve in a state legislative body. Roem had 54.59% of the votes whereas Marshall had 45.36% according to the Virginia Department of Elections.Roem told in an interview with Cosmopolitan that she views her gender identity as her strength and this will make her more successful in life.
