BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas and his wife, Afroza Abbas, yesterday moved the High Court appealing for anticipatory bail in three cases filed over the recent Naya Paltan clashes.
Afroza is also the Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal chief, reporters BDnews.
A High Court bench, led by Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Zafar Ahmed, will hear their bail pleas today.
The coupled came to the court premises early yesterday and stayed at the Supreme Court Bar Association’s hall.
A heavy brawl took place in front of the BNP’s central office at the capital’s Naya Paltan area between police and party’s supporters on Thursday.
The clash occurred during the sale of nomination forms ahead of the coming election. Two police cars were set ablaze and many vehicles were vandalised in the clash.
Several individuals wearing helmets were seen on the spot vandalising and torching vehicles. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader blamed BNP leader Mirza Abbas for the clashes.
Paltan police has filed the three cases over the incident against BNP leaders, including Abbas and Afroza.
Meanwhile, another court granted police a five-day remand to question detained BNP leader Nipun Roy Chowdhury in one case.
Except her, about 200 other people were accused in the cases, include BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP Vice-Chairman Akhtaruzzaman, its Jatrabari unit chief Nabiullah Nabi and Kafil Uddin, a member of the BNP chief’s Advisory Council.
