US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat said the United States has encouraged the government to consider changes to the recently passed Digital Security Act (DSA) 2018.
She said the US thinks the changes in the law would bring it into conformity with the Bangladesh Constitution and with Bangladesh’s international commitments on human, civil and political rights, reports The Daily Star.
In a statement issued yesterday, Bernicat said, “The United States shares the concerns of the international community that the recently passed Digital Security Act (DSA) could be used to suppress and criminalize free speech, all to the detriment of Bangladesh’s democracy, development and prosperity.”
The diplomat also said they welcome Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu’s offer to meet with media representatives to discuss their concerns about the DSA.
