Five suspected drug peddlers were killed in “gunfights” in different districts of the country in the course of the last two days.
Of them, one was killed in Mymensingh “shootout” today (Thursday) while two people were killed in Cox’s Bazar, one in Sylhet and another in Munshiganj on Wednesday.
In Mymensingh, Mobarak Hossain, drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with detectives at Nayanpur village in Bhaluka upazila early today, reports UNB.
Acting on a tip-off that a group of drug traders were trading drugs, a team of police conducted a drive in the area, said Shah Kamal, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of district police.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire at them forcing them to fire back in self-defence.
At one stage, police detained Mobarak with bullet injuries and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead.
Yaba tablets, one pistol, one pipe gun and four bullets were recovered from the spot.
In Cox’s Bazar, Najir Dacoit, 35, and Adbul Amin, 35, were killed in a “gunfight”’ with police in Kathbania Marine Drive area of Teknaf upazila yesterday.
Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 3:30 am, Pradeep Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, told UNB.
Sensing danger, the criminals opened fire on police, prompting them to fire back that triggered the “gunfight”, the news agency reports.
In Sylhet, an alleged gunfight between suspected drug peddler and Rapid Action Battalion members in Moglabazar area of Dakshin Surma upazila killed suspected drug peddler Shahidul Islam alias Shahid Miah, 40, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
