Major General Abdur Rashid (Retd.), Security and International Affairs Analyst:
The Myanmar government has now resorted to deception over taking back the forcefully displaced Rohingy:as. Myanmar is now ruled by a hybrid government, i.e. a civil-military tie. The country will not take back its citizens unless there is a mounting pressure. Because, they have driven the Rohingyas out of the country.
We see many degrees of activity of the countries, which can step up pressure on Myanmar. Not all the countries are equally active in this respect. Each of the countries is coming up with its own logics.
The western countries think that Myanmar will lean towards China if pressure is mounted. That is why; they are against intense pressure.
We have seen many initiatives and activities to repatriate the Rohingyas. In fact, the responsibility is now forced upon Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh is continuing all-out diplomatic efforts to send back the Rohingyas.
Myanmar has resorted to treachery over taking back their citizens. They do not deliver on their promises. Bangladesh is continuing its diplomatic efforts to repatriate the Rohingyas, sometimes it gains momentum and sometimes the pace slackens. It is a good sign that the effort is continuing and everybody is concerned with it.
We have seen that many countries of the world, different international agencies and the UN are coming up with their reactions.
Time has not come yet to feel disappointed. Such type of crisis cannot be resolved overnight. Hoever, the powerful countries of the world should be more active so that the Rohingyas could be repatriated sooner than later.
