DOT Desk: [2] Obhoyaronno- Bangladesh Animal Welfare Foundation which is the country’s only spay-neuter clinic for street dogs and is located inside Dhaka’s Mohakhali DNCC market, has been asked to relocate as the government has decided to set up a corona hospital there. Health officials of the Directorate General of Health Services have passed the order to them. [3] Obhoyaronno is not opposing the plan to build a hospital in the compound as they only occupy a small section of the area and want to remain there. [4] Moving would cost them a lot for instance; some 30 dogs are currently seeking treatment there and the clinic is a highly specialized facility with thousands of dollars worth of veterinary equipment and medicine. Relocation without any proper notice or an alternative venue would mean a massive financial and social loss for them and the community. [5] Authorities have been showing “negative public perception of dogs” as the reason for Obhoyaronno to move, despite zero evidence of dogs spreading or carrying covid 19. [6] If this facility shuts down, the spay-neuter programme for street dogs in Dhaka city will stop and possibly never resume again. [7] Obhoyaronno urged everyone to come forward and support them.
