Halima Akter: Vegetables might help from protect you from cancer. A team at the Francis crick institute discovered a chemical produced by eating certain vegetables that might hold a key to suppressing cancer. Some vegetables contain aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhR), a molecule that helps our gut from inflaming. Gut inflammation is a common contributor to colon cancer but AhR is stimulated by indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a cemical produced when eating veggies in the Brassica genus, which includes cabbage, kale, and broccoli to test their theory the team engineered AhR deficient mice some of which almost immediately developed colon cancer. They then fed them a diet of veggies rich in I3C. The mice without cancer suffered much less gut inflammation and mice with cancer grew fewer, more benign tumors.
