Two City Corporation Vis-à-vis
Fabia Shahzadi
City dwellers legitimately demand all civic amenities to the people by the Dhaka City Corporation as high level of tax is accumulated every year. Dhaka is one of the largest and heavily crowded cities in the world with the poorest facilities and meager resources. In this adversity of such scanty resources, it is difficult for the Dhaka City Corporation to make all the services available to the city dwellers.
However, to ameliorate the sufferings of the urbanites and ensure civic conveniences to the people, minister of local government bifurcated a single unit of City Corporation into two parts; Dhaka South and Dhaka North City Corporation. Having two elected mayors by the people, although initially some political parties and many of the other members of civil societies criticized this decision but over the time we see that this decision has provided a fruitful outcome.
So far it is evident, both the elected mayors have performed some vital services which were not found before; they shunned visual pollution in some parts of the city such as Uttara. Finally you can see the clear sky without billboards as an obstacle; evection of unauthorized settlers has been taken into account and is being solved slowly yet rigidly; making roads free from illegal occupation which was always a bothersome as well as an alarming aspect for the city people; putting together brighter, luminous street lights for the benefit of fewer accidents in any case; and the most visible, perfecting modification is the new addition of innumerable dustbins anywhere and everywhere(overlooking the fact that people still seem to be ignorant about it).
Bold with actions, an undeclared competition exists between the two mayors in providing improved services to the city people. Let us hope that this unseen competition brings out the finest utilities from both the respectable mayors.
