Waliur Rahman, Former Ambassador and Political Analyst:
The more restrictions that are placed upon the Myanmar military, the smoother the path to resolution will be. The United Nations’ report on the Rohingya issue is a positive thing for us. Myanmar is already under mounting international pressure. The UN is demanding the punishment of six generals involved in the torture, harassment and genocide of the Rohingyas.
In the meantime, the United States Congress has already placed restrictions on several military officers. Hopefully, after the State Department’s report, the amount of restrictions would further increase. The banning of 20 military officers’ Facebook accounts is a big step forward. I will go so far as to call it a big victory for refugees worldwide.
Aung San Suu Kyi has become passive. Apparently, it seems that she is not interested in the Rohingya issue at all; perhaps because she is forced to remain silent and has no real executive power.
Rohingyas are citizens of Myanmar. Today or tomorrow, Myanmar must take them back. We have to keep up diplomatic efforts in this regard and not get distracted or provoked. Myanmar will try to provoke us through different means in order to divert attention away from the Rohingya issue. We must remain alert.
