Asian Age: Theatre troupe Swapnadal is going to pay tribute to the victims of the world’s first atomic bombing in Hiroshima through staging an anti war play ‘Tringsha Shatabdi’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy today. This will be the play’s 95th show.
During the final stage of World War II, the United States dropped the nuclear weapon codenamed Little Boy on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6 in 1945. A second nuclear bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9. The two bombings, which killed at least 1,29,000 people, remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in history.
Tringsha Shatabdi, an adaptation of noted Indian playwright Badal Sircar’s play of the same title, has been directed by Zahid Repon.
The play questions the roles of historic figures like Major Ferebee (the pilot who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima) and Major Claude Robert Eatherly (the pilot of a weather reconnaissance aircraft Straight Flush that supported the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima).
Both the majors appear to be repentant for their actions. The play also features interrogation of scientist Einstein, who is credited for coming up with the theory that led to the invention of nuclear weapons. To commemorate the 73rd year of this tragic day, the troupe will also hold an antiwar poster-photography-video-installation art show from 5:00pm and a discussion.
