DOT Desk: The research vessel, ‘RV Meen Sandhani’, has so far collected the biological data of total 430 species of marine creatures in the Bay of Bengal since 2016, reports unb.
State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru revealed the information while responding to an unstarred (written) question from treasury bench MP M Abdul Latif (Chattogram-11).
Khasru said ‘RV Meen Sandhani’ continues its survey cruises. “The survey vessel has completed 22 survey cruises till January 31, 2019,” he added.
“The biological data of a total of 430 species of marine creatures have been collected by RV Meen Sandhani,” said the state minister.
Of the creatures, 364 species are of fishes, 33 shrimps, 21 crabs and 12 are of cephalopods and squillas, he said.
The survey vessel, equipped with the latest technology of fisheries and other oceanographic research, was procured from Malaysia in 2016 after Bangladesh got a vast sea area through the disposal of longstanding disputes with the two neighbouring countries — India and Myanmar.
In reply to another unstarred question from ruling Awami League MP Nurunnabi Chowdhury, the state minister said the fish production increased to 42.77 lakh tonnes in 2017-18 fiscal year from only 18.90 lakh tonnes in 2001-02 fiscal year in the country.
According to the statistics placed by Khasru, the fish production was 27.02 lakh tonnes in 2008-09 fiscal year, 36.84 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 fiscal year, 38.78 lakh tonnes in 2015-16 fiscal year and 41.34 lakh tonnes in 2016-17 fiscal year.
