Visiting US Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Sarah Sewall on Thursday sought Bangladesh’s cooperation to implement the Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism proposed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
She came up with the call during a meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam at state guesthouse Meghna, said a press release.
On January 15 last, the UN Secretary General proposed the Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism at the Leaders’ Summit on Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) in New York.
Sara Sewall noted that Bangladesh has been playing a leading role in issues like women empowerment, climate change and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and would cooperate in the implementation of the CVE action plan.
She also praised Bangladesh’s initiative to raise awareness among people through community policing and imams.
Shahriar Alam assured the US Under Secretary that Bangladesh supports all the programmes of the UN and there will be no exception regarding the implementation of the CVE.
Alan Bersin, Assistant Secretary for International Affairs and Chief Diplomatic Officer for the US who was also present at the meeting, expressed his satisfaction over the quick steps to beef up security at the airports in Bangladesh.
Sewall arrived here on Tuesday on a three-day visit.
