Natural calamity in the haor areas caused the increase in the rice price rapidly. Therefore, National Board of Revenue requested the Ministry of Food to omit tax on rice importing. But, it has been over a month and nothing has been done. The prices of rice is ever increasing. Last recorded, it has increased by 10-15 taka in a single month.
International price for rice importing has increased by 2 taka just within a month, from 27 to 29 taka. That gave rise to prices in the markets in Dhaka as well. Thick-grains are being sold at 48-50 takas and thin-grains at 58-60 takas, depending on variations.
One of the mill-owners said, 50kg Miniket rice-paddies requires 2,560 takas worth processing. That projects over 60 taka per kg for the rice.
Therefore, there is almost no chance of the price may ever decrease. Rather, it will even go up in the future.
