Dr. AB Mirza Azizul Islam, Former Finance Adviser to Caretaker Government: Repeated incidents of anomaly at Bangladesh’s central bank will erode people’s confidence.
Investigations should be launched and necessary actions should be taken against the persons involved if the allegations of serious irregularities at the central bank’s vault are proved.
The central bank has definitely failed here as the incident of reserve heist took place at Bangladesh Bank earlier. Now it is matter of concern if such incident of anomaly has really taken place at the central bank.
There should beĀ an investigation as to how gold bars changed into mix metals and how long it took to commit the misdeed.
Naturally, people’s confidence will erode in the central bank if such incidents continue to happen. As Supreme Court is the highest authority in a judicial system, so a central bank is the highest authority in financial sector.
What will happen if people lose confidence in that highest authority of the financial sector? I do not agree with those people who claim that Bangladesh Bank has turned into an irresponsible institute. I do not think the situation has worsened to such an extent. However, a kind of fear has been created in people’s mind and this is not good.
Right now, I do not want to ring alarm bells. I do not wish to make any comment if the incidents will lead to an anarchic situation.
