Noman Mosharef: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said Rangpur City Corporation elections, scheduled to be held in December, will be a competitive, transparent and neutral one the way Narayanganj and Comilla city corporations went to polls. All kinds of necessary measures will be taken accordingly, he added. The CEC made the comments after distributing smart ID cards among the residents of Narayanganj City Corporation, at the city’s Narayanganj Club Ltd Community Centre yesterday. Two city corporation, 407 local government and two national-level elections have been organised. All of them were held fairly, he said. Neither did the polls raise any eyebrow, nor drew any reaction over the elections. Considering the experience, the Rangpur city election is expected to be competitive, fair and neutral, he observed.
Attributing the delay in the smart NID card distribution, the CEC said, “We will manage to distribute 9.40 crore smart NID cards by December, 2019.” Rakib Uddin Mandal, Dhaka’s regional election officer, presided over the NID card distribution programme addressed, among others, by EC Secretariat’s Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed, Narayanganj’s Deputy Commissioner Rabbi Mia and Director General of NID Registration Wing of the EC, Brigadier General Mohammad Saidul Islam.
