The Comilla District Police Super has assured protesters that Tonu’s murderers will be arrested within 7 days. Due to this assurance the students an organizations protesting Tonu’s death have called off their activities for now.
According to the Comilla Correspondent, protesters had blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway near Nandanpur, Adarsha Sadar Upazila at 11 AM on Sunday. Most of the protesters were students from Comilla University, Victoria College and other institutions. MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar went to the site of protest at around 12:15 PM. Deputy Commissioner of Comilla Md. Hasanuzzaman Kallol, Police Super Md. Shah Abid Hossain and other administrative officers also went there around 2 PM. However, the fuming protesters carried on their activities. At one point the police charged after them with sticks. The situation deteriorated when both sides threw stones at and chased one another. Afterwards the police officers had a discussion with the protesters and made assurances of catching the murderers in 7 days. After that, the protesters stopped blocking the highway and vehicles started moving freely.
Minister of Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khanstated, “The people have already started to trust and rely on the law enforcement agencies. All the steps and incidents of this case have been made public for all to know.” He made these comments during the founding anniversary ceremony of RAB.
