Indra Krishnamurthy Nooyi , the current Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo addresses a very serious issue which we tend to ignore. Work place gender politics still exist and this is just one of the aspects of it.
In a recent interview, one of the most influential business women in the world, Nooyi explained how much she hates being called ‘sweetie’ and ‘honey’ and how all that has got to go. She explains how women have the right to be treated as normal human beings instead of ‘babe’ and ‘sweetie’.
She was also concerned about the fact that women themselves are not supportive towards each other. She has asked all women to come together and stop competing in professional settings. There has to be a strong sense of sisterhood in women themselves.
If women have to succeed in the working field they must work as a team and help each other out. We need to be clear about our own priorities and bring forward the things which matter the most to us.
There is still a notion in the society that a woman has to manage her family even if she does a job. For me this is an absurd thought. There has to be equal balance in a family. The work load needs to be shared and if a girl wants to peruse her career instead of having children, society needs to start accepting this.
As long as society does not look at women differently and keeps calling them ‘ babe and ‘honey’ this is not going to happen. And time to time we need people like Nooyi to speak up and say such unpopular things.
