None Can Hide from Media Anymore
Eshan Maitra
Bangladesh has really improved in the media sector. In current times, everything gets onto media. Barely anything ever gets unnoticed. From the news of Actress’s farts to details of military missions. All the journalists are present on the spot to capture the news. There were times when the media bases mostly situated in the cities and journalists only traveled to remote place only if there was some really important story. Though the processing equipment are only at such bases. But now, there is always a staff reporter even in the torn-island areas. Even doing live reports. Mostly this was possible by the blessing of rapid development of internet in this country. Making it impossible for media to miss out on any story at all.
After the first radio station, current ‘Bangladesh Betar’ was founded in August 1927. There was much delays of improvement in this sector right after that. But after the Liberation, specially just in last decade so many other broadcasters rose to take place. Previously, Radio lost its glory years ago and modern generation mostly avoided listening to radio. But after the modernization of the radio stations, it revolutionized this sector. Young generation became quite fond of radio because of all the interesting shows like, Voot FM etc. Currently there are over 26 radio stations all over the country, excluding many other community stations. These radio shows also bring up recent news and trends to the people. Nothing new gets unnoticed.
Also, in the same way, though there was only ‘Bangladesh Television’ for TVs in Bangladesh. But just within last two decades or so, multiple channels rose and made quite a fame very quickly. There are over 33 successful channels, including 4 channels solely for broadcasting news. Also, all other channels also have the news collecting crews and news hours, about 4 or more times a day.
The number of newspapers are even ridiculously high. That is why I left it for the last. There are over 30 Bangla Newspapers, over 15 English Newspapers and above 40 Online Newspapers! There are even 25 local newspapers all over the Bangladesh. Not to mention, there are many other bit less popular newspapers contributing in the sector as well. Many newspapers came and went. Many re-opened. But most had the same goal of bringing the news to the people. Newspapers were the first ones to give the idea about being up to date with everything that is going around us, hence the importance of news.
Because of, there are so many sources of media, and all are hunting for interesting, juicy and intriguing stories and events. Each one of them try to be as unique as possible. They all go around, even to the most remote areas as possible, to collect most recent news as possible and also take serious risks sometimes in doing so. But the truth finders in our country are either fearless or madly driven. Journalists these days sniffs out every bits and buts out of each even or incidents. One might say, if there can be so many news produced daily, there must be more crimes and miss-happenings are taking place in the country now. Actually, no. It is a great blessing of media these days that all of these stories are getting into open. These help to identify the criminals and do social investigations. Because of this, even stories of some poor victim of raped girl from a remote area also gets a full news cover. Hence, urges the authorities to take actions and people also creates movements to make so. The journalists even find and cover stories of local heroes, inspirations and even talents in the process. Even modern social medias and online portals has banned together. Moja Loss!’ page really made some social changes and created some solid awareness in their times. It is sad that the admin had to flee by threats of the militants. Again, if you can just make something go viral, all the people in the country will know about. Funny thing is, sometimes it doesn’t even have to be true. That’s where the silver-lining ends.
Since, the media is always out sniffing, they can also go all hound on some with little no evidence. Even, to make some fame many also get creative in forming their own form of news. The race to be unique sometimes even twists the truth. Like the very recent news cover by a reporter about the SSC students. These kids were badly and unfairly humiliated in front of the camera. Some did not even know they were getting filmed. But that is not what the way of media should be. They should respect others’ privacy. I literally hate those damn new age paparazzi. Yes, it is okay to make things look interesting and being bit mysterious. Again, deception and becoming artists with the words is not cool at all. Any publicity is good publicity, since it goes awfully viral these days. But bad publicity might even ruin someone’s life. That is why media has to be more careful. Perspectives should be stated personally, not as a general estimation. News should be to the point at first, then comments can be added like an artist. Again not to get corrupted in the process. People really rely on the media before planning ahead their daily hereabouts. The trust is building gradually. “Great powers comes with greater responsibilities.” After all, no one can hide from media now a day and it should be put to good use.
