“We started Memphis Meats to make eating meat delicious, safe, and healthy for everyone”- Uma Valeti, CEO and Co-founder of Memphis Meats.
We hate seeing videos that show chickens being skinned, and we dread going downstairs during Qurbani Eid to see cows being slaughtered. However, we can’t help our appetites when a big juicy burger or a tender T-bone steak. It is quite a dilemma for an animal lover to be in (Yours truly made a facebook group called “Save the Animals” while eating beef curry once). Now, you might have always thought- “If only we could eat meat without killing animals”. Well your thoughts have been answered a research team from the University of Minnesota who found a way to produce meat from harvested animal cells within 21 days.
According to a report by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, about 56 billion animals are raised to be slaughtered each year, all around the world. This number is expected to double by the year 2050. In addition to saving innocent cows and fabulous goats, the lab-manufactured meat has lower amounts of saturated fat and is free of any sort of contamination. It is also beneficial to the environment because it reduces the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane.
“The meat that we are growing is identical at the molecular and cellular level. Cultured meat will completely replace the status quo and make raising animals to eat them simply unthinkable.” said Valeti in a recent interview.
