Nahid for protecting students from militancy, drug addition
Sayeed Muhammad: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday laid emphasis on protecting students from militancy and drug addition, only to help ensure a better future. “Teachers and guardians should be aware so that students are not misguided by evil forces,” he said while addressing the 5th convocation of State University of Bangladesh (SUB) at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, reports BSS. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan, SUB Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Sayeed Salam and Chairman of the Trustee Board of SUB Dr AM Shamim, among others, attended the event where Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, founder chairman of Bishwa Sahitya Kendra, was the convocation speaker. The government will take legal actions against the private universities which have failed to fulfill their conditions conforming with the Private University Act-2010, warned the minister, adding, some of the private universities are yet to fulfill their conditions as per the Act and they have to face legal actions after the scheduled timeframe. Hinting at to the students, Nahid said, “You are the future of the country. So, you have to be good citizens through acquiring knowledge to boost the development process for building a prosperous Bangladesh.” Nahid urged the authorities concerned to ensure congenial and good academic atmosphere at all educational institutions to make those free from all sorts of terror activities. “Both public and private universities should be centre of excellence for practicing new knowledge…Without ensuring good academic atmosphere, it is not possible for improving quality of tertiary education,” he added. The government has expanded the opportunity of higher education across the country for all students, he said, adding that students are easily receiving higher education as we have expanded facilities for higher education up to the upazila level.
