Desk Report: As a result of protesting against drug abuse, 50-year-old Mominul Islam has been lamed. He can’t move his left hand and right leg now, reports Daily Star.
“But the sad thing is that the people, who put me in this situation, are yet to be arrested,” repents Mominul, a day labourer hailing from Bholarchawra village in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila.
As he is now unable to work, his wife Mahima runs the five-member family with her meagre income, he said, adding that she earns Tk 120 per day by working at a farmland.
Mominul and his brother Manik Miah, 35, were hacked in their heads, shoulders, legs and hands as they raised strong voice against drug abuse on December 24 last year, said police and locals.
The injured were rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where they underwent treatment for over a month.
Although Manik recovered quickly, Mominul became lame after being discharged from the hospital.
The villagers bore their treatment cost as the two siblings tried to free the area from drug users, said Shahabul Islam, 46, a resident of the village.
Mofazzal Hossain, 45, a relative of the siblings, later filed a case, accusing Abdul Latif, 55, a retired police constable of the area, his wife Nilufa Begum, 46, and two sons Rashedul Islam, 28, and Jahedul Islam, 24, said Sub-inspector Asadul Haque of Sadar Police Station.
The accused are drug traders and they have been selling contraband drugs in different areas for long, said the SI, also investigation officer of the case.
Police are raiding different areas to arrest the accused, said the police official.
