Mehedi Hasan: Renovation work needed to be done in a faster way, to help us survive in hostile environment. New plans were supposed to be taken up for the water-stagnation problem. It is also necessary to work fast on the plans considering them long-term ones. These comments were made by Prof Dr Nazrul Islam, former chairman of the UGC, when the newspaper interviewed him of late.It seems like rain of this time around is heavier than that of the past years, he said. So it may cause more water-logging, triggering deeper sufferings to the city dwellers this year. This is like to happen because renovation works on addressing water-logging are not up to the mark as expected earlier. Moreover, construction works in many places have gone up in the mean time. So, the situation might get rather worse. He also said canals and drains were not cleaned up as thought. A large pipeline of bio-meter is being installed underground at Dhanmondi-27, which is stretch to Hatirjheel. The work on the project has advanced far, but is yet to end. There will be no positive result of the move, until the project is complete. Since canals have not been dug or re-excavated as planned, there is be water-logging like the past or it might get heavier.
