CNN’s Nic Robertson explains the four political terms you’ll need to stay ahead of the curve in 2017.
Hearing new words this year? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Politics is creating a fresh vocabulary this year. Words seemingly so new that you do not know what they mean. That’s where this comes in: the humble dictionary.
1. Post-Truth: You have heard a lot this recently. It means ‘Relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion that appeal to emotion and personal belief.’
2. What about the word Nationalism? It is not so new and was very popular in 40’s and 60’s. And now in the new era of Trump’s “Make America Great Again”, this word is in the rise again. This means ‘A Patriotic feeling , principles or efforts, that, in an extreme sense could be marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries.
3. Then there is Populism that became popular. This is defined in the dictionary as ‘Support for the concerns of ordinary people.’
4. Lastly the most used word is Alt-Right. Heard this word? This term is so trendy that it is short listed for the word of the year. It is defined as ‘An ideological grouping associated with extreme conservative or reactionary viewpoints, characterized by a rejection of mainstream viewpoints. It also refers to the use of online media to “disseminate deliberately controversial content.’
Where would we be without this book? Memorize them, learn them because chances are that you will be hearing them a lot this year.
