As you may already know, restrictions on wearing full faced veils have been set in countries across Europe (France, Bulgaria and the Netherlands to name a few). Whilst this is a restriction on a human right in itself, who knew that showing care, affection and support would be added to the list..
In the photo below, you can see a Danish police officer hugging a woman who is wearing a niqab. The photo was allegedly taken at a protest in Copenhagan. The protest was fighting against – you guessed it – a ban on full face veils that has now taken effect in Denmark.
Whilst it is not clear if the police woman was embracing the lady or holding her because she was ill, to me the exact reason for this event taking place is meaningless. It is shocking that this police officer is being investigated, as if she has broken a code of conduct. Her job may be to protect the public, but I BELIEVE SHE WAS. This woman was clearly distressed, as her devotion to her religion is being jeopardised by this ban. Why should a government be able to tell people how to dress and what to wear? Why shouldn’t this woman hug this woman. At the end of it all, regardless of occupation, age and race, we are all humans, and it is in our womanly nature to be caring, maternal and loving, and I am proud of this amazing policewoman for her act of kindness on Wednesday.
