How Movies And Documentaries Can Be Turned Into Knowledge?
Ashik Kabir
Movies and documentaries are good mediums for carrying out information regarding different issues. The new generation is further electronic media oriented. What I am trying to say is it’s not like the old days when we were only dependable on books for gaining knowledge. With the advancement of the technologies we have everything in our finger tips. People are more likely to indulge themselves in short forms of entertainment which can amuse them in one hand and on the other hand help them to opt for knowledge. There are huge sources of informative movies and documentaries in the market and also available online social media. I am sure of the fact that if we type any topics and search in the net we can find several movies or documentaries list on that particular topic. I have a hobby of collecting movies and documentaries which are informative. The best way of learning is not only reading books but watching movies and documentaries also. But of course no one can take the place of books. But movies and documentaries can carry the messages in just a short period of time. People who are not very much into reading books can quench their thirst by these movies and documentaries. But of course not all the movies available on the topic that one is looking for are worth watching. You have to be very much concern and choosy with which of the available sources you are going to treat yourself. For example – if you are interested in knowing about Adolf Hitler you can go with the Canadian short film named “The rise and the fall of an Evil” which has two parts. There are several movies and documentaries on the holocaust of the Second World War. There are movies like schindler’s list which is based on the novel “Schindler’s Ark” of an Australian novelist Thomas Keneally. The film is based on the life of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand mostly polish-Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. Similarly there are such movies like “Life is beautiful” and “The pianist” which give us the pictures of the Holocaust. If we are interested in knowing about what is happening in African countries like what Joseph Kony did to the poor children of Uganda by forcing them to become child soldiers and making them involve in inhuman activities we can just type Joseph kony in YouTube and watch documentaries available on him. We can also watch the Movie “Blood diamond” to know the sufferings of the African people. When the issue of what happened in Rwanda and Burundi in the year 1994 arises the best movie to look for is “Hotel Rwanda” no one can beat this movie to bring about the true picture of Rwanda of that time. We can also refer to the movie “Somewhere in April” for this Ethnic war between the Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda. These movies also shows us the International community only being observer of the massacre because there jurisdiction didn’t permit them to involve in a civil war of a country. As they were only allowed to control the relation between countries not involve in the internal issues of a country. There are Nepali documentaries like “The day my god died” which highlights the issues of human trafficking and forceful prostitution in India. The documentary shows how women and children are being trafficked from Nepal and Bangladesh to Indian cities like Mumbai for prostitution. When we watch the documentary named “The march of penguin” we come to know how incredible the penguins are to share the works between the male and female penguin equally and how inspiring it is for us. The sacrifice that the male and female penguins do for their new born child will touch our hearts and make us hate the circumstances they face in Antarctica. There are Indian directors like Mritunjoy Devvrat who makes movies like “children of war” which carries the untold story of the women who were raped in the Pakistani military camps during the Liberation war of Bangladesh. There are lots of movies on the Liberation war of Bangladesh available today in the market but still we need movies and documentaries with precise information about our liberation war like we have seen in the movie “Hotel Rwanda”. There are lots of issues to be learnt with the help of the electronic media. Because when we see the American movie “JFK” which shows us the investigation of the murder of late American President John F. Kennedy we feel astonished by the evidence of involvement of CIA in the assassination of the president. There can be also an effort made from our side to bring out the truth hidden behind the assassination of our father of nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as well. There is information available in the forms of movies and documentaries around us we just need to grab them and treat us with those information. But it is up to us which information we are going to turn into our knowledge. I am sure that educative movies and documentaries can bring about a visible change in us for sure and make us pensive about the known and unknown mysteries of the world.
