Hospitals with specialized services not obeying instructions

Special services such as Intensive Care Units (ICU), Coronary Care Units (CCU), Kidney Dialysis Units etc. have sprung up in clinics and diagnostic centers of the country. These hospitals have started these services based on the general license that they have to practice medicine.
Directorate General of Health Services has not given these hospitals permission to start these services. These hospitals are not following certain conditions that have to be maintained to get permission to provide these services.
Director of the Heath Directorate (Hospitals) Prof Dr. Samiul Islam Sadi stated, “We are verifying if the new hospitals asking permission to provide these services are following all the conditions. The hospitals that come here for license renewal are being asked to do the same.”
According to Health Directorate sources, the Directorate had asked the hospitals with permission to run ICU, CCU etc. services to submit a report of all their information. From November, 2015 to February, 2016, only 44 hospitals submitted the reports.
The hospitals follow the‘Medical Practice and Private clinics and. Laboratories (Regulation) Ordinance’ of 1982. This ordinance has no separate conditions about providing special services.
The Directorate is creating conditions and a list of medical appliances necessary to open ICU, CCU and other specialized care services. The Directorate has a set of instructions concerning the personnel needed to run these Units. However, most clinics and hospitals do not follow them and charge extra money for specialized services they are not qualified to run. When raided, such hospitals are often fined with a large sum and shut down, only to open up and run in the same way a few days later.
