Do you think the use of these words are offensive in the workplace?
Honey, Sweetie, Bud Buddy, etc.
Maybe it’s a personal preference, but I don’t think they are necessary. Now, I am talking about in a work related context. It’s ok if your Gram Gram calls you Sweetie or if Pop Pop calls you Bud, but that is sort of the problem. These words traditionally imply someone referring to someone who is younger, usually a baby. “Hey sweetie, don’t stick your hand in your diaper” The other context this is used is with pets. “Hey buddy, you want to go outside to potty”.I know some of you are going to say that I don’t like them because I’m insecure, but it’s more about mutual respect. You wouldn’t go around saying “You really pulled off that presentation Gramps.” It implies that you didn’t expect him to do well on the presentation because he’s old.We are told to consider age just as a number, but we can’t do that if everyone isn’t treated with respect. We all need to be treated as equals regardless of age, sex, race, or any other irrelevant factor. It’s not a big deal by any means. There are far worse things to call someone, but it’s just something I don’t like. It’s just not necessary to add them in.
