On monday, the High court to save 50 of Dhaka’s canals showed concerns by ordering to prepare an action plan along with a report of their current states and list of illegal occupants and pollutants. The two city corporation mayors, Director Generals of Environment Department and Water Development Board, Chairman of Rajuk and Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka are asked to to the task. A bence formed by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan ran the orders following a writ petition filed by BELA (Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association), as they demanded recovery and maintenance of the canals – reports UNB. The court also asked the authorities concerned to explain why the failure and inactivity of the defendants to prevent pollution and occupation of the canals will not be declared illegal and why they will not be ordered to recover the occupied canals by issuing a ruling. BELA issued a writ attaching reports from various newspapers on occupation and pollution of Dhaka canals.
