The High Court has asked for a health report of Barrister Mainul Hosein, who is behind bars after verbally abusing a female journalist on television, reports The Daily Star.
The court asked to submit the report before it by Sunday.
It also asked authorities to provide adequate security to Mainul if he is transferred to another jail from Rangpur jail, where he is being held.
The High Court bench of Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir came up with the order today after hearing two separate petitions filed by Mainul’s wife Saju Hossein.
She filed the petition recently seeking order to admit Mainul to a specialised hospital in Dhaka, saying he is suffering from heart, diabetes and kidney ailments.
In another separate petition, Saju Hossein challenged the government’s failure and inaction to prevent the recent attack on Mainul at Rangpur court.
She sought a rule; why the government’s failure to provide adequate security to Mainul should not be declared illegal, her lawyer Advocate M Masud Rana told The Daily Star.
Rangpur Medical College has been asked to examine the health of Mainul under the supervision of local chief judicial magistrate. DIG of police of Rangpur range, has been asked to submit the medical report.
Mainul had called journalist Masuda Bhatti a person of “loose character” at the talk show of Ekattor Journal. He was connected through videoconference.
