Our Time Desk
Before we work our way into the semantics of why, how and where Google’s AI (artificial intelligence) defeated the current reigning champ of the Go series in China. Lets gets to know what Go really is.
Go is a traditional Asian game not unlike checkers. It is an intellectual game played on a carved wooden board with black and white stones made from slate or clamshells. There are cheaper sets available in the market as well. It is a game of intense meditations and relaxations that can be used as a correlation for life. People of all ages and walks of life can play the game to either while away the hour or take it as a serious championship.
Google’s AI system was set against a world champion player in a game of Go, it has been announced that the artificial intelligence has trounced the World Champion Lee Sedol and Fan Hui in their matches.
The program named AlphaGo, is currently in a five match faceoff with the former world champion Lee Sedol in South Korea. So far news has filtered through that Sedol has been bested twice in 2 days. Sedol was astounded in the first round when he was bested by the artificial intelligence at Go which is considered the most complicated game in the world. He says that he never expected something artificial to play such a perfect game. Cho Hanseung a Go Player and enthusiast says that when Google said that AlphaGo had a 50-50 chance no one including himself believed them, until they saw it with their own eyes.
Earlier European Go Champion Fan Hui was also defeated by the system and says that he was suitable impressed with the work of the system. AlphaGo is said to be coded with a separate learning system that allows it to take in data and learn from moves and mistakes. To be fair, GoGameGuru a Go game website says that Sedol played extremely well considering the fact that he was playing against an unknown whereas, AlphaGo had brushed up on Sedol’s game for some time.
