Asim Qureshi, CEO Jibble Group & LaunchPad/ Linked In
A young junior guy in the company I run, Jibble Group, comes up to me and asks me “Asim, how do I get promoted faster? Everyone says I need experience, but I don’t want to wait.”I like this guy’s attitude – the first thing he’s done is got himself noticed with me – he’s already made a smart move and wedged his foot in the door. This is what I advised him. “Explain to your manager that you are willing to do what it takes to get that promotion, and ask him/her to explain to you exactly why you have not already been promoted. Get it in writing. Ask for examples where your actions were that of the unpromoted person, not of the promoted one.”
“Make sure you fully understand what is expected from you, work on these shortcomings, and every few months meet your manager to see if you’ve addressed them. Listen to that feedback. Do this a few times, and you’ll either keep failing to improve, which could be because you just need time, or you’ll get that promotion.”
Now, I know it won’t happen for him, but it could for you – you could get bullshit excuses. If you know you’ve raised your game and your manager repeatedly won’t recognise it, my advice is simple – leave that manager – either change departments or quit. Or watch your career go nowhere.
