Written by: Eshan Maitra
Two fancy escalators added footover bridges, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and Banani are out of order for about a month. Locks are hanging in front of the steps. Also, the escalators are in worst technical condition possible from consecutive repairing now and then. 12-15 thousands use these bridges per hour. The daily service load turned out be way over than estimated. Direct caretakers are struggling to keep these running.
Only Horizon Techno Limited is looking after these escalators currently. The service costing goes over 50 thousands taka each month. The escalators need 5 servicing and 5 cleaning runs each month. Their direct operators have become stupefied. They requested for help and were promised of 30 thousand from City Corporation. But none of it ever came, aggrieves Horizon Techno Limited Director Ahsan Habib to Banglaa Tribune.
He also added that, footover at the Airport still has 1 year guarantee till August. So, company is bound for servicing. On the other hand, escalator in the Banani is 3 years old. Its working belt has abraded by heavy service load. Until, DNCC sends any work-order upon their sent offer-letter. They aren’t obliged for repairing.
DNCC Engineer Chief Brig. Gen. Md. Syed Anwarul Islam could be contacted even after multiple phone calls and messages, regarding this matter.
This footover project from DNCC was received by Air Force’s Dockyard & Engineers Workers Limited. But instead, they gave away the sub-contract to Atlantic Marine Company. Then, Atlantic Marine Company bought the escalators from Horizon Techno Limited. So, Horizon Techno Limited is the current and only caretaker.
