Flyovers might become a burden after 20 years or so. Because of their poor long-term planning. Even, none of these compact flyovers can be extended or reformed in the future. While most development projects in the urban cities are taken, with the aim to service or evolve over centuries. Such, development projects in Bangladesh are meant to last for 5-10 years only, said city expert Engr. Iqbal Habib.
These flyovers are clogging up the forgotten streets under them as well. While, only about 10% of the city population uses these flyovers, claimed another city expert Tariqul Islam. Population & number of vehicles are ever increasing in the cities. Along with the severe traffic jam issues, he added. Bangladesh Road Transportation Authority (BRTA) estimates, there will be about 5 crores vehicles running in Dhaka City, after 20 years. But the City Corporation plans to increase the number of mass public friendly transportations such as buses & commuter trains, said DSCC Urban Planner Sirajul Islam.
