DOT Desk: The need to diversify our export basket has been discussed repeatedly in the past few years, and it is promising to see the authorities push for a strategic change, reports Dhaka Tribune.
The agriculture minister recently urged mango farmers to focus on the expansion of mango exports by finding suitable regions with higher demand, especially in light of our bilateral partnership with the EU An EU-funded project is currently underway that aims to assist those in poverty-prone areas lead better lives. Which is why it is crucial on our part that the main source of their livelihood, agriculture, be prioritized to ensure better livelihoods for the majority of our population. To that end, expanding our mango exports can be an intelligent move to not only properly utilize our production capacity and diversify our export basket, but to also make our mark globally as fruit exporters. Mango exports to Italy have already begun earlier this month, and with proper research on what other areas could potentially have a higher demand, it is absolutely possible to build a large overseas market for us.
Our country has depended on the RMG sector for the lion’s share of our revenue for far too long, and it is clear that this is not a sustainable route for our further progress. Therefore, it is only logical to employ our vast agricultural sector and rich produce to create a wider safety net for our nation’s future.
