Though, transferring tanneries from Hazaribag was a wise initiation to save the river. That reduced, 40% of its pollution source. But other chemical contaminations have been dumped in the Burganga River at the same rate as, it has been done for ages. Without controlling this massive flow of pollutant wastes, the river has turned into nothing but a sewer. Recent statistic report show, 178 waste pipelines from industries dumps toxic chemical solutions including cyanide, mercury, lead & 62 other dangerous particles. Also, hospital bio-hazard wastes with gauge-bandage & antibiotics are dumped here at a daily basis. Not to mention the obvious amount of sewer dump from one the most populous city in the world.
21,000 cubic meter waste dumping has been stopped due to closing of tanneries. Still, 90,000 cubic meter other industrial wastes, 12 lacs cubic meter unfiltered sewer waste, 4,000 tons household wastes and 40,000 cubic meter water-vehicle wastes. River water’s color has shifted to disgusting colors. The oxygen level here is near zero. The river has inhabitable for fishes and marine lives. This river’s condition will one day determine the habitability of whole Dhaka Mega City in the future, warns the experts.
