“He would be fascinated by light. What makes him among the great cinematographers is he understands the film as a language. The conventional way of seeing cinematography is just a set of tools,” Alfanso Cauron says about three time Oscar winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. He is also known as “Chivo” means goat in Spanish.
Chivo was born and brought up in Mexico City and his father was an actor and producer. He was the student of history in the Mexico City and wanted to be a still photographer. Toronto Film Festival invited their film “Love in the time of Hysteria” and “Like Water for Chocolate.” Jeanne Tripplehorn liked his work and asked him to work with her upcoming new project “Reality Bites” directed by Ben Stiller. It was the story of his professional career in Hollywood.
Chivo has worked with various kinds of filmmaker like Coen Brothers, Martin Scorsese, Michael Man, Alfanco Cauron, Aljendro Gonzalez Inarritu and Terrence Malick. “Sleepy Hollow,” “The New World,” “Children of Men,” “The Tree of Life,” “Gravity,” “Bird Man,” and “The Revenant” are his most acclaimed movies .
He frequently takes long shots and his understanding of light is outstanding. Cauron stated, “He would be fascinated by light.”
“Gravity,” directed by Alfonso Cauron, a science fiction thriller film which set on outer space. His cinematography was outstanding because of the combination with computer-generated images of space. In Birdman, he did it as photographed
in one continues take. Last year his collaboration with Birdman’s director Inarritu, they have done it in the real location
and his experiment with light was too gorgeous.
He is the only cinematographer in the history who has won three consecutive academy awards for best cinematographer out of his eight nominations. It is an outstanding feelings for him and said “I don’t know if I’m incredible cinematographer, but I’m definitely a craftsman that is trying to find a language for each project and that’s really exciting for me.”
