Workers are constantly in danger of getting into accidents due to lack of security in the workplace, reports Somoy TV. Most accidents take place in the construction sector. Still, millions of people have to risk their lives and attend work for their livelihood.
According to the latest estimates of Bangladesh Institute of Labor Studies from 2008 to 2015, 6287 workers have died in the workplace due to lack of security and 10041 people were injured as well. Among the total number of workers who died, 722 of them were from the construction sector. Although the Government acknowledged that there is lack of security in the workplace, they are giving more importance to raise public awareness rather than solving this issue.
According to Somoy TV’s report, labor Minister Mujibul Haque said, “We have noticed that in many cases construction workers are not given the safety materials in the workplace. In some cases, we have taken legal action for their protection.”
To ensure the security of construction workers, private firms have strictly implemented the relevant clauses of the labor law.
