The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has sought Home Ministry’s permission to accept a complaint as a sedition case against The Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam.
Inspector Nur Hossain (Investigation) of Kotwali Police Station sent a letter to the Home Ministry on Saturday in this regard.
Sitakunda upazila chairman and district (North) Jubo League president SM Al Mamun filed the complaint on February 17. Nur Hossain was appointed investigation officer in this regard.
Hossain said the Home Ministry’s permission is needed to record a sedition case. The complaint would be recorded as a sedition case once the permission is granted, he said.
On February 17, two defamation and a sedition cases were filed in the district against The Daily Star editor for publishing ‘confusing’ and ‘defamatory’ reports in his daily on Awami League President Sheikh Hasina during the military-backed caretaker tenure.
The court summoned Mahfuz Anam in the defamation cases and asked the officer officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station to take action as per law in the sedition case.
