DOT Desk: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the BNP gave students arms whereas she gave them books and pens, reports The Daily Star.
She said this after inaugurating the 30th national council of Bangladesh Chhatra League at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital.
“Chhatra League’s council is being held in the month of victory. I congratulate all the leaders and activists of Chhatra League because it has made contributions during every struggle of this country,” she said. “After Ziaur Rahman seized power in 1975 violating the constitution, he abducted several Chhatra League leaders, including Babu, and killed many army and air force personnel who opposed him. Their families could not even find the bodies…
“The BNP’s job is to destroy the education environment. The elderly leaders and activists of Chhatra League must remember that Khaleda Zia once said her Chhatra Dal was enough to teach Awami League a lesson. They gave students arms. In protest, I gave students books, notebooks and pens,” she said.
Earlier, Hasina inaugurated the council of the party’s student wing at 11:20am by hoisting the national and party flags.
BCL President Al Nahian Khan Joy and General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee, among others, were present.
Since early morning, leaders and activists of different units of the Chhatra League have been pouring into Suhrawardy Udyan.
Carrying banners and festoons, they arrived at the venue from various directions.
The last BCL national council was held in May 2018.
