Batman V Superman – Dawn of Justice is one of the most anticipated movies of 2016 is here and we can’t keep ourselves calm. Many of us are debating who would win in the actual fight between the Caped Crusader of Gotham and the Last Son of Krypton. But this isn’t the first time they faced off. In the comics and cartoons they’ve face off against each other multiple times on various occasions.
The Dark Knight Returns – 1986 (Issues #1-4)
Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns is undoubtedly one of the best graphic novels out there. An aged Batman returns after years of not putting on the cowl to save Gotham from an evil group who calls themselves “The Mutants”. His method of doing so is somewhat more brutal than usual. As a result, the U.S. government sends in Superman to stop him. Superman, weakened after taking a hit from an atomic bomb, takes on Batman. Batman uses a tech suit and other gadgets to stand his own ground. Zack Snyder’s BvS took heavy inspiration from this novel. If you haven’t read the novel, go watch the 2 part animated movie (2012 and 2013).
Justice League: Origins – 2011 (Issues #1-6)
In 2011 DC revamped their universe with the New 52 relaunch. In Justice League: Origins, we see an already established Batman fighting against a newly emerging Superman. Batman considers Superman to be a threat to humanity and takes it as his duty to stop him.
The fight was due to a misunderstanding and this very fight brought the Justice League together for the very first time. 2014’s Justice League: War is based on this New 52 storyline with a few changes. You’ll be able to see that very fight there.
Batman: Hush – 2002 (Issues #608-619)
Here we see Superman being mind controlled by Poison Ivy’s neurotoxin spores. Batman faces off Superman. But superman isn’t at his fullest as his subconscious was constantly fighting off the toxin.
Superman: Red Son – 2003 (Issues#1-3)
Ever wondered what would’ve happened if Kal-El’s escape pod didn’t land in Kansas instead it landed in the Soviet Union? Well this Elseworld story answers that very question. Superman turns into an intimidating dictator of the Soviet Union. A Russian Batman trains himself to avenge the death of his parents (killed by communists) and swears to take down Superman and his corrupt government.
Injustice: Gods Among Us – 2013 (Issue#36)
The Joker tricks superman into killing Lois Lane and his unborn child while also detonating a nuclear bomb destroying Metropolis.
Superman, out of sheer rage kills the Joker and takes it up as his task to keep Earth safe and appoints himself as High Councilor.
On the other hand, Batman leads an insurgency determined to restore freedom in the world. The video game of the same title follows this storyline.
The Duo came toe to toe on several other occasions but unfortunately the editor gave me a word limit. Also I didn’t give away the winner of each battle as it’ll ruin the whole fun of you, readers. In other words, I’m not giving away any spoilers. I’m not that evil.
