DOT Desk: Prof Md Sharfuddin Ahmed, vice chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), asked the countrymen to be alert against monkeypox despite no cases were reported in Bangladesh so far, “Over 17,000 monkeypox patients have been identified around the world, whereas Bangladesh is still in the safe zone,” he said at a press conference yesterday, reports Dhaka Tribune.
However, it is necessary to take precautionary measures, he said before adding BSMMU is ready to treat people if cases are detected.
He noted that government should take strict measures to test people who are entering Bangladesh from other countries.
Prof Ahmed later suggested that if someone shows symptoms close to monkeypox, they should be kept in isolation.
Referring to the cause of monkeypox infection, he said: “The virus can spread through direct contact. It can also be transmitted by respiratory droplets. One can also become infected through close physical contact with infected person.”
