Bangabandhu’s people, Bangabandhu’s belief
Dr Kamal Hossain, Politician, Chief of the Constitution Drafting Committee:
I was initiated into the politics by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Before entering into politics, Bangabandhu once told me, “You are a good lawyer. You have come from a middle-income family and established yourself in your own right. So it is not difficult for you to achieve name and fame in your profession. But I think you should join politics and work for the welfare of the people. People’s love is incalculable and you will not get even in exchange of an astronomical amount of money.”
Bangabandhu said this to me during 1969. I realize the truth every moment uttered by Bangabandhu. Actually money has no meaning in this world. My realization was reinforced when I mixed with people very closely during different natural calamities. I toured many places along with Bangabandhu and stood by flood-affected people. It cannot be described in words how it feels to work for the people. 50 years have already gone by but those days are still etched in the people’s memories. People’s love is unique.
We achieved independence through an armed struggle in 1971. Then many incidents had taken place in the country. I had to live in exile for five years following the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975. People did not forget it too. Wining the hearts of the people has been possible only due to fair politics. The fair politics was not to be found after 1975. That time there were some people who compromised and became beneficiary. The number of people believing in benefit-politics is too many. Some people will always remain to go with the stream. But we have to wage our struggle for fair politics. We have to follow in the footprints of Bangabandhu.
