Sayeed Muhammad: It appears that the suspected and listed drug peddlers are not getting respite from the ongoing countrywide anti-drug crackdown with another 11 killed in parts of the country.
The latest figure takes the tally of the deceased, including a municipal councilor who was dead in Cox’s Bazar, to 84 since May 4.
In Cox’s Bazar, Ekramul Haque, 46, also a councillor in Teknaf Municipality, was killed in a gunfight on Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf marine drive road in Noakhaliapara in Teknaf. Around 10,000 yaba tablets, a foreign pistol, a one shooter gun, six round bullets and five bullet shells were recovered from the spot.
In Bagerhat, Mitul Biswas, 45, was killed at Chinguri-Mochondopur in Chitalmari upazila. He was an accused in 22 cases. Police recovered 100 yaba tablets, 2-kg hemp, a shutter gun and two bullets from the spot. In Kushtia, Halim Mondol, 35, died in Housing area in Kushtia town. Police recovered one shutter gun, one pipe gun, 3 bullets and 800 yaba tablets.
In Meherpur, a top drug peddler, Hafizul Islam, 45, was killed at Garabaria. Islam was accused in 12 drug cases. In Jhenidah, Rafikul Islam alias Luton, 36, was killed in a “gunfight” between two groups of drug peddlers on Jhenidah-Kushtia highway near Bordah-Jamalpur village.
