Actors, celebrities leading Awami League’s party nomination race
DOT Desk: The ruling party Awami League on Tuesday sold 810 nomination papers on the first day of selling nomination paper for the reserved seat in the 12th national parliament, reports Dhaka Tribune.
Apart from the activists and leaders of Awami League, celebrities, film stars, and actors also applied for Awami League’s party nomination to secure a seat in the parliament. The candidates started collecting forms from the central party office of Awami League, at 10am on Tuesday.
Notable actors including Apu Biswas, Nipun Akhter, Syeda Kamrun Naher Shahnoor, Urmila Srabanti Kar, Sohana Saba, Tanven Sweety, and Meher Afroz Shaon collected nomination forms from Awami League and expressed their hope about getting the nomination.
While talking to the journalists, Tanven Sweety said: “I am doing my best as a small worker of the party. I want nomination from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party to do more for common people.” After collecting the nomination paper, Dhallywood actor Apu Biswas said: “I always want to promote women. If I am given the opportunity, I will work for people.” Sohana Saba, another popular film star, said: “When you think about the country, you must consider Awami League. There is no other way. That’s why I want to be a candidate from Awami League.”
Another TV actor Urmila Srabanti Kar said: “I have been involved in Awami League politics since my university life. So, I am very much optimistic as my political career is very long. I have worked with people from all walks of life. The scope of work will be longer if I get the party nomination.” What does Awami League say?
In response to the journalists’ questions about nominations for the reserved women’s seats in the national parliament, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader mentioned that the Awami League would nominate dedicated and tested individuals. He praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her foresight and diligence in identifying potential candidates during district visits. Earlier, Quader inspected the nomination form distribution and submission process for the reserved women’s seats of the 12th national parliament at the Awami League’s central office. The process will continue until Thursday. The Election Commission has finalized March 14 as the date of voting for the 50 seats reserved for women in the 12th national parliament.
